Networking Opportunities at MDVAN Luncheon

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

Yesterday, I had the valuable opportunity to attend an advocacy luncheon for Volunteer Administrators hosted by MDVAN (Metropolitan Detroit Volunteer Administration Network). It was a unique event designed to promote networking and information sharing among those in the volunteer administration industry. One thing I found valuable was the representation from so many different agencies. We saw the usual larger agencies but many smaller ones and even some sole proprietors committed to empowering community through volunteerism.

I sat next to an amazing volunteer who has worked with a local agency for over two decades. Hearing her extol the benefits of volunteering and exhorting us to listen and know our volunteers was enlightening. She had an impact on me and I walked away having experienced the power of volunteerism in southeastern Michigan.

By the way, if you work with volunteers in any capacity, membership in MDVAN should be an essential part of your career toolbox. You can find them at MDVAN.org. As they continue to grow and enhance both their presence and service to community, it will be worth your while to be a part of this movement.
